The South Leeds Lakers Become An Affiliated Running Club

Phil Hodgson

Just over a year after forming the South Leeds Lakers running group has gained affiliation to England Athletics.

Building on the success of Cross Flatts parkrun the Lakers were set up to meet the ever increasing popularity of running in South Leeds in early 2015.  Funding from Leeds City Council, England Athletics and the Hunslet Rugby Foundation saw two run leaders trained up and the Lakers were up and running (literally).

The group has gone from strength to strength with over 40 would be Mo Farahs pounding the streets of Beeston every Tuesday evening.

The decision to affiliate was not taken lightly amid concerns the group may lose the friendly and social aspect which has made it so popular.  However, there are many benefits* to affiliation, not least ensuring the South Leeds community has the same opportunities as people north of the river where there are thriving clubs like Valley Striders, St Theresa’s and Hyde Park Harriers

*Benefits include discount on race fees, a place in the Club draw for a London marathon place, free winter league races and access to Run England coaches.

Mindful of these concerns the Lakers have set up a two membership options which will still offer FREE social running to anyone who wants it.

Committee member Phil Hodgson commented:

The option of free running is at the heart of the Lakers and sets us aside from other affiliated running clubs where a membership fee is charged

Adding…

Those who wish to affiliate and receive the benefits offered by England Athletics, such as discount on race entry fees, can rest assured they are paying the lowest subscriptions in the country. The price has been set to cover the £13 affiliation fee with no addition for other administrative costs!

The South Leeds Lakers Running Club meets at Beeston Coop at 6.45pm every Tuesday evening.  There are usually 3 run groups which cater for all abilities.  If you are interested in joining them just bob along, you’ll be assured of a warm welcome.
