What is the Run Leeds Survey?

Rachel Atherton

You may have seen that we have launched our Run Leeds survey!

Why are we doing a survey?

If you’ve had a chance to read our article about Run Leeds being back, you will know that the programme has recently taken a slight change in terms of its direction.  We will still be supporting the social running offer across the city, but we also want to look at how we can support those people who are regularly running to keep running when life throws in some challenging changes.

How are we doing this?

We are working in partnership with Leeds Beckett University to undertake this research.  The survey has been designed as a way of looking further into how people adapt and maintain their physical activity habits when encountering a challenging personal circumstance. There are 7 life changing factors that we will be specially exploring and these are:

  1. Bereavement
  2. Relationship breakdown
  3. Exam Stress
  4. Health and medical conditions
  5. Changes in the family (e.g divorce and pregnancy)
  6. Changes in living circumstance (e.g moving house)
  7. Gender reassignment

We will also be looking into the importance of participants and run leader personality, resilience and social connections in maintaining a physical activity habit such as running. Therefore the questions in the survey have therefore been developed to dig a little deeper into these factors.

What’s next?

Once the survey data collection has ended Leeds Beckett will be analysing the response to identify patterns, trends and key areas of interest.

Following on from the survey we are hoping to conduct follow up interviews and case studies with participants to learn more about the factors that were uncovered during the survey.

What does this mean to me?

Taking part in the survey will allow you to share your own personal experiences. This will then provide the opportunity to shape the approach to the social running community in the future.

We will be using the outcomes of the research to implement changes to the running community in Leeds, and it will allow us to tailor the support that we can offer to clubs and groups.
